These beautiful dimensional sled ornaments are fun and easy to make. In my samples, I used contrasting hardwoods to set the runners apart from the sled tops. You could also use birch plywood and paint them fun colors if you wish.

When choosing wood for these sleds, it is best to use hardwood with a tight and even grain to hold the design well. In my examples, I used birch for the sled tops and walnut and jatoba for the runners, but you could also use other hardwoods such as maple, cherry and hickory and have good results. I would suggest that you stay away from open-grained woods such as oak or softer woods such as pine and poplar, as they may tend to crack or break easily. The sleds are great candidates for making several at a time by stack cutting.

If you haven’t tried stack cutting before, you may want to read Keith’s article that he wrote. It is available on the “Articles & Videos” page along with other informative articles and videos that will help you learn more about scroll sawing. I hope you enjoy them and enjoy making these cute ornaments.
