While similar to our filigree patterns, these “fretwork” ornaments have lines that follow the natural lines of the birds and leaves. You can make these with or without a backer. Without backers will be a bit delicate so I suggest that you use 3/16″ to 1/4″ for more durable ornament. Of course if you make the 2-layer version, 1/8″ wood is fine. The single layer version does have a bit of extra thickness around the outer perimeter to help with durability. I think these designs would also be good candidates to enlarge and use as suncatchers or wall plaques.
