These simple bunny puzzles are a fun project to make and give.
In doing the research for this project, I came across a ‘recipe’ for a finish using beeswax and mineral oil. I liked this idea because I never like using smelly chemicals that may be harmful or have unpleasant odors. While I understand that most finishes are not harmful once cured, I felt a lot better about using mineral oil and beeswax for a toy that would be handled heavily by children. I also liked that there was no smell when applying it, and the finish was just beautiful.
I decided to add just a touch of accent color using DecoArt brand “Multi-Surface Satin” acrylic paint. I love the beautiful colors that they came in, and they have great adhesion to just about any surface. They need no primer, and no top coat sealer and dry to a wonderful satin finish that is both durable and beautiful. I hope you give them a try.
While you can use pine or any scraps of wood you have around, I used hard maple for my samples. I find that maple and other tight grained hardwood really stands up to years of use and makes a beautiful, heirloom quality project. I think you will find these puzzles fun and easy to create!
